     Hazel eyes were on the prosthetic he was working on, eyes turning to look when he heard her speak. The rebel shifted, pulling his hair back and glancing to the project before him. This person needed this prosthetic.. and he was taught how to make these but right now his head was getting foggy and he really wasn’t in it. “I was thinking about going for coffee.. but I can walk you home instead if you’d like.” Call him overprotective but he’d rather make sure his sister got home safe as opposed to anything else.

     He’d heard the voice before the name and face registered. Far before. It’s been before repressed memories, locked tight and filed away so deep in his mind that he had barely regarded them until the proper time and place. When that was depended on the conversation.. but he forced himself to cope using humor and comedy. But he made it through. One could only do what they could in order to keep going. For him it was a matter of keeping moving forward until it became too much--hopeully he was young enough that he could go a while before it tried to take him down or bother him. Trauma doesn’t pick people based on how old they are. It picks the ones that have survived it. He knew that much..

     It’s been a very long time since he’s heard that tone of pessimism. How old were they? Seventeen? Maybe younger? He knew that it had been.. a very long time since he’d seen him. It had taken a few moments of looking over the face to recognize who it was. So many memories are jumbled before he’d made it into clear waters, so to speak. “I think it comes with the territory of being a rebel, honestly...” He paused, hazel eyes glancing over him almost curiously. “It’s been a long time, Sam. How’ve you been?”

     Of course they were. It was war it was chaos it was pain. For so long none of them knew what happened to the others and they had no way of knowing what went on after they were separated. “Sometimes it happens.” Somehow, it didn’t matter how many people he tried to protect, they still fell. He was not made to withstand such things and yet he still tried to fight and struggled against everything that happened. He’d lost his mother, sister, and father for months without knowing what happened to any of them and yet when he went looking he was finally found. He had lost count of the months it had taken to be found but..

     “It doesn’t matter what you do, it will happen in War.” There was some small semblance of thought when he opened hazel eyes, brows knit and a small frown on his face. “They won’t thank us for slowing down and quitting. It wouldn’t be honoring the life they gave to save things if we stopped now.” They wouldn’t thank them for quitting. They wouldn’t want him to stop in his tracks to grieve them until the dust was settled and the pain they fought to free others from was no longer. It had almost been you, Matt. He could remember it.

     There’s a moment the man is puzzled, eyes wide and brows raised in alarm. There’s a number of things that he could say or do about what just happened, though for the time being he glanced at Lance. He thought the guy was going to be talking to one of the two of them but he was definitely surprised to see that it was Lance he was going for. “Dude.. you want a wingman or a fake boyfriend? It’s totally up to you but I have your back.” Lance seemed to have some form of resistance to Matt at first, but.. they were getting along a little more now that they were taking some time to get to know one another. Hazel eyes watch the other for response, those hazel eyes shifting between the guy at the bar and Lance. While he would support him if he wanted to meet the guy, he would also get him away from him if that was also what he wanted. 

     Hopefully the bar wasn’t going to be weird when it came to this kind of thing but Lance seemed to want to be here, so he was going to indulge him at the very least. “But uh you might want to let me know before he gets back over here. That way we can respond properly.”

     “Either I’m the worst liar or I’m the best actor.” Not his usual upbeat reaction, but the man shifted, hazel eyes going to watch the other after a moment. “What did you say happened again?” A sandy blond brow raised, head tilted some while he glanced over the brunet. It was understandable, usually this was him. But he hadn’t been out of the lab today. Spook mewed from her place on the table and hopped down, moving to sniff at James before rubbing up against the man’s leg. 

     “Because if it isn’t me, there’s perhaps one other person that immediately comes to mind that could have done it.”

    There’s a laugh, the sandy blond haired rebel shifting to set down what he was doing. “I love you, bitch.” A Classic. There would eventually be a time when he would use more vines but for the time being he hadn’t had a lot of time to even stop and think--until it was his turn in the prank war, that is. There were so many vines that he could remember... a bunch. And he was definitely grateful for it. That one would, however, always apply.

     “Yeah but like dude… if you were a smart liar, you’d tell the same lie every time.” No, he’s not calling him dumb… he’s just calling him a bad liar. There’s a difference between the two. The man couldn’t help the humored smile over his face, brows turned up some in apology, those hazel irises showing both humor and apology.. he was honestly split between the two.

     Matt had been wearily looking at some guys off in the corner the entire time they’d been here. Trying to get out of the Garrison proved to be fruitful, it was just being here and seeing those guys that had made him second guess the decision to go to this place in particular. Keith, being his ever observant self had apparently noticed Matt eyeing the guys with an air of caution, lips turned down in a frown. Something told him he’d known these guys before. he’d seen them before at the very least. With everything being.. a little skewed since the fighting, though, he could always be wrong. 

     Hazel eyes shift from the men occupying that corner before landing on Keith with a small grateful smile. “We can both take ‘em out pretty easy y’know.” Sure, Matt was good at fighting now. He would never be that innocent kid he was so long ago. He had to fake his own death, after all. He could honestly flatten them in moments if he so wished. But.. He didn’t want to have to.. if that made sense.. If he didn’t have to fight, he didn’t want to. It was why he was a communications officer. “But.. thanks, Keith..”
